5 Things Mentally Strong Business Leaders Do Every Day

Business man with a groupIt is important to be mentally strong when you’re a business leader. Jeff Haden calls it “grit.” You will likely be under a great deal of pressure and have plenty of stress you have to deal with on a daily basis as a business leader. Having the mental strength to push forward when all you want to do is sit down and just let someone else deal with the issue is integral to building and leading a successful business. Here are five things mentally strong business leaders do every single day:

  1. Fake it ‘til they make it. Chances are, if you see someone in a high-stress position who acts totally calm and collected, they are actually acting. Or, rather, they’ve been acting for so long that it’s now become a reality. They become mentally strong by going through the motions of looking and acting mentally strong.
  1. Worry only about the things they have the power to change. Have you heard the serenity prayer? “God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference.” Mentally strong business leaders live by this mantra every day. There will be many things that you cannot change that affect your business. If you focus your energy on what you can change, you’ll be much happier and more successful. 
  1. Learn from their mistakes, instead of wallowing in them. Instead of being pulled into the doldrums by a mistake, big or small, they use it as a learning opportunity. They’ll do a postmortem, determine the fatal flaw or flaws of their decisions or actions, and use that knowledge to do better next time. They do not wallow. 
  1. Do not whine or complain. Complaining wastes time. Sure, it can be nice to vent, but if you’re venting instead of dealing with a problem (or leaving it in the dust, if you can’t change it), then no progress is being made. Plus, what you say has a real effect on how you feel and what you do. Negativity in your words leads to negativity in your mind and actions.
  1. Practice gratitude. Mentally strong people are fully aware of how lucky they are and they regularly write down the things that they are grateful for. They look for opportunities to express gratitude, to celebrate successes, and to acknowledge help, support, and love from others, both inside their business and without it.
