What Business Owners Can Learn From Will Smith
Will Smith is one of the biggest and best actors in Hollywood. You love him for movies like Independence Day, I Am Legend, and for sitcoms like Fresh Prince. The crazy thing about Will Smith is he didn’t happen upon Hollywood on accident. He got there through pure ambition and hard work. While Will Smith is unique to Hollywood in a lot of ways, his philosophies are certainly helpful for entrepreneurs. Here is some advice from Will Smith that if you take to heart, will help you grow your business.
Lay One Brick At A Time
Will Smith says, “you don’t try to build a wall. You don’t set out to build a wall. You don’t say, I’m going to build the biggest, baddest, greatest wall that’s ever been built. You don’t start there. You say: I’m going to lay this brick as perfectly as a brick can be laid. And you do that every single day, and soon you’ll have a wall.”
I think this is one of the best business, and even life, quotes. How true is this? Getting a large job done, like building a company, starts by laying one brick at a time. In fact, if you think about building a huge wall, the idea of work can become so overwhelming that you never get anything done. If, on the other hand, you think about laying just one brick a day at a time, eventually you will have a wall. It’s all about working on smaller goals to accomplish bigger goals. As you continue working, eventually you will realize that you have created the empire you always dreamed about creating.
Will Smith also says, “while the other guy’s sleeping, I’m working. While the other guy’s eating, I’m working.”
It’s really as simple as that. The harder you work, the more you will accomplish. It’s really true that the early bird catches the worm, and hard work outweighs talent a lot of the time. If you are willing to put in the hours and the hard work, you will see your company grow. Remember, however, that if you are going out of your mind, it’s important to institute some balance. Take time to be with your family, and take time to rest. After all, you don’t want to go crazy in the process of building your company.
Make A Choice
Finally, Will Smith offers this encouragement, “just decide what it’s going to be, who you’re going to be, how you’re going to do it. Just decide. And then, from that point, the universe is going to get out of your way.”
Deciding what you want to be is half the battle, and thankfully, for most people, they decide early on what they want to be and what they want to do. Once you have made a decision about what you want to do and who you want to be, then go for it. Don’t let anything stop you.
